This passports are issued to nationals of Germany for the purpose of international travel. A German passport is one way to prove your identity. The German ID card and the German Emergency Travel Document are also accepted. These are the only documents that German authorities recognize as proof of identity for German citizens.

In addition to confirming identity and indicating German nationality, these documents help individuals obtain assistance from German consular officials abroad, or from other EU member states if a German consulate is unavailable.

Every German citizen is also a citizen of the European Union. The German passport, along with the national identity card, grants the right to move and reside freely in any EU or European Economic Area country.

Since November 1, 2005, these passports have included a contactless smartcard chip embedded in the front cover, in line with ICAO standards.

While the chip and antenna are not easily visible, their presence is marked by the ICAO biometric passport symbol located at the bottom of the front cover. This chip stores all the information printed in the passport, including a JPEG image of the holder’s photo, secured by a digital signature.
